Let me repeat that. Sequel to Cosmos. Hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson. On FOX. In primetime. Spearheaded by the creator of Family Guy.
I’m a bit bewildered and confused but simultaneously really excited.
Now, I’m sure there is going to be a bit of change up in style in order to connect with a modern audience. Sagan speaks with astounding poetic power to explain the concepts of science. Tyson is a bit more lighthearted and energetic. I think so long as the message is the same, that science is a powerful and the best tool to understand the universe in which we live and the best true hope for our continued enlightenment as a species, then I’ll be perfectly content with this production. And my hopes may be well placed as the new series as Ann Druyan and Steve Soter, who helped write the original series, are on board for the new one.
I only watched Cosmos last year on Netflix, but for being 30 years old it still powerful and poignant. It is likely the best documentary series ever made, and certainly the best I’ve ever seen. If you haven’t watched it, check out the first few minutes here, and then head to Netflix and get watching.
Did you enjoy the five minutes linked above? If you did, you can at least start your journey with Carl with the entirety of episode 1, right here:
EDIT: It has come to my attention that Netflix no longer streams Cosmos. Shame on them! You know who does have it though? Hulu.
For all my new found admiration for The Doctor, I will always stand by what I consider to be the greatest time travel franchise in history: Back to the Future. The original trilogy films are among some of my favorites and are always fun to watch. So, imagine my delight when I learned that TellTale Games would be making an official game with a new story. I love graphic adventures, I’ve been pleased with TellTale’s work and I love BttF. So, was the five episode adventure with Marty and Doc as good as the films? Let’s give it look, shall we?
So, yesterday was a pretty good day for me. Allow me to explain the full breadth of what such a day entailed.
First off, I get up at 11:30, simply because Heather finally decided I had slept too late. All-in-all, I woke refreshed and ready. We went to go grab some lunch. We came home, I relaxed and played a few games.
Around 2:15, we headed over to the neighboring town of Waynesboro to go see the new Thor movie at the first stadium-seating digital theater in the area (about time we got one). Thor was fun. I know nothing about the source material from the comics so I can’t pass any judgement on that front, but overall the film was fun and never took itself too seriously. Plus the fact it has Natalie Portman playing an astrophysicist. A “Hollywood” astrophysicist, but an astrophysicist none-the-less. If you know me at all, you’d understand the amount of man-jelly I turned into at that notion. The film is good entertainment and worth checking out.
Afterwards, we were headed over to my good friend Dana’s home to celebrate her birthday/nursing school graduation. On the way, we stopped at a 7-11 to pick up some soda for the party. Heather got a big Slurpee in a Thor cup, which made her to revert to child-like glee which was really cute. But I walk into the 7-11 and right there by the front door are some movies. Immediately catching my eye was “previously viewed” copy, that I’m fairly certain was new, of the Discovery Channel series When We Left Earth about the history of NASA’s manned-spaceflight program on Blu-Ray. It was only $13. With no hesitation I picked that up. Great series that I recommend if you like that sort of thing. Its on Netflix Instant Watch.
Then we headed over to Dana’s where I got to spend time with good friends I hadn’t seen in a while, eat some good food and congratulate one of my best friends on a great accomplishment. When we got tired, we left and got home just in time to catch the newest episode of Doctor Who on BBC America.
What does a good day look like? It looks like that.
Hey! So yesterday was my birthday. My 28th to be precise. Holy crap!
I posted about the fact that I’m now contributing over at GeekLore. So that’s good. But then I realized I haven’t contributed anything worthwhile to my own site since NOVEMBER! More holy crap! Let’s get that fixed.
For those of you who stick around despite my lack of updates, I’ll give the quick notice of stuff going on in the land of murf.
First off is the biggest of the big news: I’m getting married! Back in December I popped the question to my wonderful girlfriend and she squeaked a “yes” out between the tears of joy. So… that’s where I’ve been. Trying to help get a wedding organized. Its certainly more stressful on Heather than it is on me as she is doing most of the planning and coordinating, but I try to be as involved as I can be.
Aaaand… nothing else really. I’ve played some games, had some fun, done some work but all in all my life hasn’t been too terribly exciting lately except for that whole getting married thing. I know its not much of an update, but I’ll take my small victories where I can find them.
With my contributing over at GeekLore, I’ll likely be cross posting material that I post there as well. Though perhaps with some minor variations in verbiage to account for the different posting locations.
A buddy of mine recently started a collaborative blog called “GeekLore.” A site for general discussion of all things geek. It’s a young site, so support is nice. But this is more than a simple shout-out for the sake of a friend. I have a stake in this too.
I’m a contributor on the site as well. I’m even going to try and do a regular feature called “murf’s Friday Five” where I talk about whatever topic suits my fancy and list five things in relation to that topic. They are presented in no real order, so its not a ‘top five’ list. Just a list of 5 things on a topic. I’ll also write other articles as they suit my desires.
So where does this leave murfSTUFF? No where it wasn’t already, except maybe in a better place. I like contributing with other people in a location where I’m likely to draw more eyes. That being said, GeekLore is not a place for personal posts about my life or perhaps even a place to stand on a soapbox. If I get more into posting on GeekLore, then maybe vicariously murfSTUFF will become more active as I produce new content. Especially in regards to cross posting content where I would find it agreeable and amenable to the needs of GeekLore.
That being said, let’s hope this is finally the thing I need to keep things going.
Part of me feels like I should get Diablo III, but I really can't seem to muster any real enthusiasm. I'm just not feeling it. Oh well.01:25:20 PM May 15, 2012from TweetDeck
